In August, Ecosure team members joined Springfield Lakes Nature Care Inc and a group of passionate volunteers for the annual Platypus Watch event. 

Together, we surveyed Opossum, Woogaroo, and Sandy Creek across four sites. We braved the 13°C chill to arrive at our observation spots before sunrise. Armed with thermoses of tea and coffee, we quietly watched the water, hoping for a glimpse of one of Australia’s most elusive native animals. 

While sightings were rare, one lucky volunteer spotted a platypus, affectionately named Sandy, twice during her survey. She captured video footage of Sandy swimming and diving, contributing valuable data to Wildlife Queensland’s Platypus Watch team and Dr Tamielle Brunt from the Wildlife Preservation Society. 

These observations, even when brief, are vital. Platypus populations are declining due to habitat loss and waterway degradation, yet they continue to survive in urban and modified environments. That’s why events like Platypus Watch, and the data they generate, are so important. 

At Ecosure, we’re proud to support these efforts. We have a proven record in: 

• Aquatic surveys, including platypus habitat assessments and dawn spotlighting 

• Burrow monitoring and fyke net trapping 

• Habitat restoration planning and implementation for aquatic and terrestrial species 

Platypus are listed as a significant species in the Brisbane City Plan, and conservation actions have been in place since 2005. With ongoing support, we can help improve habitat conditions, connectivity, and resilience for these unique animals.
