Flying-foxes are the unsung heroes of our forests – think of them as giant bees carrying pollen and seeds tens (sometimes hundreds!) of kilometres each night, helping forests regenerate and thrive. But as important as they are ecologically, flying-foxes can also create challenges when living close to people. That is why the National Flying-Fox Forum was created – to bring everyone to the table to find smart, consistent ways to balance conservation and community. 

And this year was extra special! Ecosure proudly hosted the 10th National Flying-Fox Forum. What began a decade ago as a collaborative initiative has now grown into a landmark event on the environmental calendar. Over the years, more than 1,000 people have attended, representing every level of government, alongside academics, industry leaders, NGOs and passionate community members. 

This year’s Forum was our biggest yet, with over 110 people joining us in Cairns and more than 50 tuning in online as part of the 20th International Bat Research Conference. The energy in the room was incredible, a true testament to how far the Forum has come. 

One of the highlights was a workshop led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, looking at the future of the National Flying-Fox Monitoring Program (NFFMP). Running from 2012–2023, this program has provided invaluable insights into the health and trends of flying-fox populations. The workshop gave attendees fresh updates and a real chance to help shape what comes next. 

Hosting the 10th National Flying-Fox Forum is something we’re immensely proud of at Ecosure. It’s proof that collaboration works, and that when science, policy, and community come together, big things are possible. Here’s to the next 10 years of flying-fox conservation and management!
