Ecosure, on behalf of the City of Gold Coast, recently conducted a thermal drone survey to monitor koalas in the Parkwood-Arundel area. With koalas facing increasing threats from habitat loss and urban expansion, gathering accurate data is essential for conservation efforts. This survey is part of ongoing efforts to gather accurate data on koala populations, particularly in high threat areas identified under the City’s Koala Conservation Plan.

Traditional survey methods can be challenging, particularly in dense bushland where visibility is limited. By using drones equipped with high-resolution thermal cameras, koalas can be detected more efficiently, providing a clearer picture of population densities and habitat use. The survey confirmed the presence of 43 adult koalas, including four with joeys, across multiple sites. Notably, several koalas were found in small urban parks, highlighting the importance of protecting both core habitats and fragmented green spaces.

These findings contribute to the broader understanding of the Parkwood-Coombabah koala metapopulation, which spans multiple suburbs. The data collected complements ongoing monitoring programs and will inform targeted conservation actions, including habitat restoration, land-use planning, and long-term population management.

This project demonstrates the value of innovative technology in ecological research and reinforces the need for continued investment in conservation. The full report, the first of its kind for the City, is now publicly available, providing important insights to support the future protection of koalas in the region.
