Trigger Warning: Deceased Animal Pouch Pictured 

One of our team members recently came across a deceased Eastern Grey Kangaroo and discovered a surviving joey still in the pouch. It was a powerful reminder of how important it is to stop and check wildlife casualties when it’s safe to do so. 

If you hit or encounter a deceased marsupial such as wallabies or kangaroos, please consider checking the pouch for a joey. In some cases, the adult may still be alive but suffering from severe injuries, and joeys can survive for hours or even days without assistance. 

If a joey is found, gently move the mother off the road (if safe), and contact a wildlife carer immediately. Very young joeys may still be fused to the teat, so removal should only be done by a trained rescuer. 

📞 In Queensland, call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) for wildlife rescue support. You can also reach out to RSPCA, WIRES or Wildcare. For severely injured macropods, the Queensland Police Service may attend to perform humane euthanasia if required. 

Please consider avoiding driving during dusk and dawn, especially in bushland areas, as wildlife is most active during these times. If you must drive, slow down, take your time and stay alert—your caution could save a life.
