In December 2023, the first inspection took place, marking the beginning of an insightful journey into the lives of Sleeman’s inhabitants.  Nest box type, condition, location coordinates, and identification numbers were meticulously catalogued.  But perhaps most thrilling were the discoveries of species occupancy—evidence of a thriving ecosystem within the complex’s bounds.

As the 2024 new year dawned, another round of inspections ensued, revealing further signs of life within these man-made sanctuaries.  The results were impressive: out of the 89 nest boxes monitored, over 80% of the total nest boxes were occupied (40%) or showed occupancy signs.  From the acrobatic antics of squirrel gliders to the vibrant hues of rainbow lorikeet chicks, Sleeman Sports Complex had become a bustling haven for both familiar and lesser-known wildlife. 

This speaks volumes about Sleeman’s dedication to conservation efforts. By investing resources and effort into habitat restoration, the complex has demonstrated a profound commitment to environmental stewardship.
