Whilst COVID 19 has made us look at how we can work differently, it has also encouraged us to look at the changes to our operations and our environmental footprint. Lockdown drops air pollution in Brisbane and Gold Coast
In South East Queensland, during lockdown the reduced impacts of NO2 with less cars on the road, is eye-opening. Brisbane and the Gold Coast indeed showed the expected decrease in nitrogen dioxide concentrations correlating with confinement measures to for COVID-19. On average, pollution in the city fell by 30% after the lockdown was put in place.
The red in the images shows a higher concentration of nitrogen dioxide, while the green and yellow show less. This link to the original article shows 5 images of how air pollution in Australia changed before and after lockdown. Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney had significant decreases in NO2. While Newcastle and Melbourne showed a surprising increase!
As we return to the office environment, let’s ponder how we can continue to reduce our environmental footprint.
